"Dark
Energy and the Runaway Universe"

Dr. Alex Filippenko, Prof. of Astronomy at the University
of California Berkeley
A free public lecture describing the most surprising and mysterious astronomical
discovery of the last quarter century will be given by noted
astronomer and gifted teacher Dr. Alex Filippenko, Prof.
of Astronomy at the University of California Berkeley. It
will be given Saturday evening, September 27th at 7:30 PM
in the Rotunda Auditorium, Building 03, Room 213 on the
Cal Poly Campus. The talk, entitled "Dark Energy and
the Runaway Universe" will describe how a mysterious
force appears to be overcoming gravity and causing the expansion
of the universe to be speeding up. Dr. Filippenko will describe
how this discovery was made and the major implications it
has for basic physics.
Dr. Filippenko has been on the forefront of this discovery and
has received numerous teaching awards and has produced an
acclaimed video course. In the past year he has been prominently
featured in many episodes of "The Universe" television
series on the History Channel. The lecture is intended for
the lay public and high school students are encouraged to
attend. Parking is free on the weekends. The event is sponsored
jointly by the Central Coast Astronomical Society, Cal Poly
Physics Department, Cal Poly Astronomy Club, the SLO Institute
for Discovery and Cuesta College. For further details and
a map of the Cal Poly campus go to the CCAS website www.ccastronomy.org
and click on EVENTS.
High
school students are especially encouraged to attend with
their parents and teachers.
This event is jointly sponsored by the Discovery
Institute, Central Coast Astronomical Society, Cal Poly
