On May 23rd, 2009 the Discovery Institute for the Advancement of Science and Technology Education, in partnership with Cuesta College and the County Office of Education, provided San Luis Obispo County with an exciting day of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics demonstrations, presentations and hands-on activities.

Students, parents, and teachers from Cuesta College, Cal Poly, Morro Bay High School, Atascadero High School, and Arroyo Grande High School, and theTempleton Endeavour Academyshowcased several experimental-based projects that demonstrated their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This event brought together some of the best and brightest young minds of San Luis Obispo County and was a grand success.

We can be very proud of all of these students -- they are the ones who will make a difference in our economic future world and in our world.  Enjoy the pics and be sure to encourage your children with an interest in the STEM fields to get involved in the next STEM Showcase which is scheduled for May 22, 2010. We are planning a more competitive robotics competition with higher stakes.  Please email or call the Discovery Institute to get yourself or your students involved for next year.

One of the highlights was an edge-of-your-seat robotics competition. Following three rounds and playoff round, the Atascadero Team took the sought after $200 prize with their robot, “Raptor” just edging out Arroyo Grande Team.   All students received at least one doorprize for presenting at the event, ranging from dinners at local restaurants, movie tickets, t-shirts, and even a very unique bongo drum!

San Luis Obispo Mayor Dave Romero and President of Cuesta College President Dave Pelham addressed and welcomed the participants.  Patti Garrett, Director of Education at the County Office of Education, handed out certificates from the Office of Sam Blakeslee. Our excellent speaker, meteorologist John Lindsey, spoke on the status and future of alternative energy sources.  We also had Cuesta student, Jo Johnson, give us a cool impromptu presentation on “Exo Planets.”

“Because other nations have, and probably will continue to have, the competitive advantage of low-wage structure, the United States must compete by optimizing its knowledge-based resources, particularly in science and technology, and by sustaining the most fertile environment for new and revitalized industries and the well paying jobs they bring. We have already seen that capital, factories, and laboratories readily move wherever they are thought to have the greatest promise of return.”
